An Ode to the Late, Great Shel Silverstein

An Ode to Shel Silverstein:
by Amy Lynne Bate

When I was a child, I found comfort in books
My most favorite by Shel Silverstein
With silly illustrations and lyrical hooks
And stories I’d take to my dreams
Now as a grown-up; with kids of my own
I rediscovered his brilliance
And I wrote him a poem:

Thank you, kind sir
For “Where the Sidewalk Ends”
For “Deaf Donald” and “Razor-Tailed Wren”
For “Monsters I’ve Met”
And for “Moon-Catching Net”
For “little Peggy Ann McKay”
For all of the Gypsies that would “take us away”
For (Lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy) “Lazy Jane”
I still lay around in hopes it will rain
Thank you for “For Sale”; I had a brother and sold him,
For “Peanut Butter Sandwich” and “Pirate Captain Jim”
Thanks to Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout,
I always take the garbage out
Thanks for “Spaghetti” and “Sitter” and “Chester”
For “Making A List” and “Hiccup Cure” and “Lester”
Thanks for “Jimmy Jet and His TV Set”
For “Me and My Giant” and “Magic Carpet”
For “Standing is Stupid”, “Something’s Missing”, “Have Fun”-
For “Hector the Collector” and “Benjamin Bunn”
For “How Not to Have to Dry the Dishes”
For “Surprise” and “Suspense” and “Superstitious”
Thanks for “Rock ‘n’ Roll Band” and for “Sour Face Ann”
For “My Beard” and “Twistable, Turnable Man”

The list could go on (and on!) endlessly
I just wanted to say “Thank You”……
